Statscan confirms recession–economy in election campaign spotlight

Confirmation from Statistics Canada that the country was in a recession for the first 6 months of the year, has kept the economy in the election spotlight.

Political analyst – and former VIU prof – Alan Warnke says it’s likely to stay there a while longer; for a couple of reasons.

Warnke says one is that it’s starting to highlight differences between the NDP and Liberals that could sway some undecided voters.

Warnke says the other reason is that even with his opponents blaming him for the negative numbers, Conservative leader Stephen Harper feels campaigning on the economy, plays to his strength.
