Courtenay crews battle fire at Grains Bakery

Grains Bakery in Courtenay has closed up shop for Tuesday, March 28th after a Monday evening fire.

Courtenay Fire Deputy Chief Kurt McDonald says the incident happened at around 7:30 PM on Monday, March 27th. He notes that when crews arrived on scene there were flames coming out of the roof and smoke inside the structure.

“Upon investigation we found that a small fire had started above one of the ovens in the ceiling assembly. Crews pulled the ceiling, extinguished the fire and we were able to minimize the damage to the structure”, he says.

McDonald says the night shift production crew made an attempt at extinguishing the fire. Once they found that they couldn’t put it out, they evacuated the building as fire crews arrived.
