Stocky Edwards is Courtenay’s newest Freeman of the City

The Freeman of the City is given to someone who exemplifies what it means to be a good citizen in their community and country.

This year’s recipient, James “Stocky” Edwards is a true Canadian hero, serving the country in World War 2. The 94-year-old has been described as Canada’s greatest living flying ace.

Stocky says it’s great if he gets to represent the men he fought alongside during the war.

Stocky says he’s impressed that many youth are interested in hearing more about war time experiences…

Courtenay mayor Larry Jangula says Freeman of the City is the most distinguished award that a municipality can give a city, adding Edwards is the most decorated Canadian war hero there is.

The Freeman of the City honour shows that Stocky Edwards is someone who has and will continue to influence future generations for many years to come.
