Seaweed harvest gets the green light

A controversial seaweed harvest will go ahead on Vancouver Island..after a study by Vancouver Island University cleared the way.

Huge amounts of Mazzaella japonica wash up on beaches around Deep Bay every winter… it’s prized as a source used in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

But some are worried taking it from the beaches could harm the environment…

Brian Kingzett of VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station says their study found it doesn’t have a significant impact

In light of the study, the province has awarded 5 licenses to harvest a total of 2,000 tonnes in 2015.
