There’s been some recent trouble with bears getting into garbage in the village of Cumberland.

Now, the village is looking into bear resistant solid waste containers. Cumberland Mayor Leslie Baird says the containers can be quite pricey. Residents will soon be able to decide whether or not they would want to purchase them for their homes.

Baird adds these containers also help out the bears because once a bear becomes habituated in a community, they have to be destroyed for the safety of the public. She’s hoping the survey, and the possibility of having these waste containers, will educate residents on the dangers open garbage has on the lives of bears.

Baird says the survey will be launched on February 20th.
