Fundraiser supports Fort McMurray residents

Fort McMurray residents are expressing their thanks for the support they’ve received from Vancouver Islanders. 98.9 the Goat teamed up with local rescue crews and businesses to help in the relief efforts in Fort McMurray yesterday.

More than $10,000 was collected in support of the Red Cross at a fundraising event at Simms Park.

Fort McMurray residents Chris and Stacey Steedman lost their home in the fire and came to Vancouver Island to stay with family. Stacey says they are thankful for the support from islanders.

Emergency Program Coordinator Howie Siemens says recovery is the longest part of any major disaster.

Evacuees of the fire have been told that it is still not safe to return, as the risk of flare ups is still too high. $13,546.60 was raised at yesterday’s fundraising community event.
