Being protected against mumps

Vancouver Coastal Health is urging people to make sure they are protected against mumps.

Medical Health Officer Doctor Althea Hayden says they have had more than 40 cases of mumps in the Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler areas.

She notes that people can get sick while they’re abroad, and bring mumps to their home.

Hayden says many people born between 1970 and 1996 have only received one dose of the MMR vaccine and may be vulnerable to getting the disease.

She says there’s no harm to getting another shot if you’re not sure if you’re fully protected.
