Major reconstruction of 3rd street in Courtenay gets underway today.

Manager of Transportation and Utilities Craig Perry says the work will include the replacement of underground utilities, new pavement, gutters and sidewalks. Perry says 3rd Street rose to the top of the list on capital projects due to the bad conditions of the asphalt.

Perry says a full asphalt assessment was done for the city a few years ago, and 3rd Street was right at the top of the list of streets that needed work done.

Perry says 3rd street will be closed to regular traffic while the work is underway.

The work is expected to take until mid-October.
