New alliance formed to combat ocean acidification
BC has teamed up with other coastal communities to form the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification.
Spokesperson Jay Manning says ocean acidification is a serious problem affecting the marine environment.
Manning says acidification not only has a major effect on marine life, but also greatly impacts the economy. He notes it affects coastal businesses that rely on shellfish, and fishing resources.
Members of the Alliance will work to advance on 5 goals, including increasing public awareness on the effects of ocean acidification. So far, the task force is comprised of representatives from BC, Washington, Oregon and California.
