Local Mounties welcome new penalties for distracted drivers

A heads up for drivers caught yapping away on your cellphones, you are about to be hit with three demerit points on your drivers licence…if you rack up more points in getting nailed again, you’ll be hit in the pocketbook on your next insurance bill renewal.

The penalty points will be in addition to the fines drivers already face. This new penalty also covers infractions like watching a DVD, programming a phone’s GPS, and operating hand-held audio players.

We spoke with Comox Valley RCMP Sergeant Roger Plamondon who says RCMP in the region welcome this…

Plamondon says it is very obvious, the current penalties are simply not working…

Justice Minister Suzanne Anton says people need to get the message that distracted driving is now the second leading cause of death on our roads after speeding.

More than three points on your license means a $175 insurance penalty. More than one distracted driving ticket in a year will now set you back 634-Dollars. The new point system will also see repeat offenders paying much more for their insurance.
