It is the first key phase of a major safety improvement project on the Puntledge River in the Comox Valley.

That from BC Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson, who says work will begin shortly on a new public warning system for the watershed.

Watson says another major component of the multi-phase project involves upgrading instrumentation…the guages along the river system indicating flow levels. Down the road another phase involves a new system for managing so called “unplanned flow events”, such as the one that took place last summer with the accidental release of a huge volume of water downstream. Fortunately it was a cool, cloudy day with few people out in the river, so there were no injuries.
