Preventing the Spread of Zebra and Quagga Mussels in BC Lakes
The Coastal Invasive Species Committee is sending out a warning about Zebra and Quagga Mussels.
Don Hare says they are one of the most destructive invasive species. He says there’s a huge effort provincially to keep them out of British Columbia.
“So these are the [species] that attach themselves to the boats and get transferred from different areas. So there’s a lot down South outside of BC, and then Ontario way and even Manitoba they’ve got them,” he says.
“So any of these boats that people might be taking for a holiday if they go down South, and bring back, we have to make sure that we’re not bringing these Zebra Mussels into BC lakes.”
Hare says they’re almost impossible to get rid of once they get into the province. For more on the Coastal Invasive Species Committee, visit their website at www.coastalisc.com.
