At its meeting tonight, Courtenay council will discuss the Bill C-45 Cannabis Act, in relation to consideration of business licensing and zoning regulations.

This comes after a newly opened dispensary, Leaf Compassion Dispensary, was shut down earlier this month. The bill is looking to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Criminal Code and other Acts.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are planning to legalize marijuana next summer.

Courtenay Mayor Larry Jangula says that the City will not issue licenses until it is determined that a marijuana business is legal. The recently shut down Comox Valley dispensary did not have a valid business license when it was shut down by police at the beginning of October.

Since RCMP raided the store-front, City Hall has dealt with a number of calls and emails from the store’s supporters.
