Local company rebranding in light of Sears shut-down

COURTENAY, B.C.- A Comox Valley company is changing its name after a 25 year partnership with Sears.

The last of the remaining Sears stores in Canada closed their doors over the weekend, after the company announced its closure late last year.

In the wake of the shut-down, Courtenay’s Sears Carpet, Upholstery and Air Duct Cleaning is changing its name to Fresh Look Carpet, Upholstery and Air Duct Cleaning.

“Twenty-five years ago, Sears Canada had approached us and asked us to become a service provider because they had heard of the great work we provided to the Valley under (the name) ‘Comox Valley Rug’, which is what we were previously many years ago,” said Cindy Steuart, the owner of Fresh Look.

“We continued on as their service provider. We were always an independently-owned company, but worked under the Sears name.”

Steuart said the name change is solely connected to the Sears Canada closure.

“We spoke to (long-time) customers of ours and came up with the new name of Fresh Look.”

She said the company is working on a final new logo before refitting the look of their office.

“With Sears going into protection back in June, they started to slowly change over and not have as much communication with us,” she said.

“We were in a contract, and we did receive notice from them that they were just nullifying our contract, the same sort of thing that they did with all the stores when they did the close-down.”

The Moray Avenue business has been running in the Comox Valley since 1992.

“We are excited about our future, (and) we know that we will continue on and provide the same great service to all of our customers but of course, we are all saddened by the closure of Sears.”
