COMOX, B.C- High school students in the Comox Valley are going to have a chance to be firefighters this month.
The annual Firefighter Youth Camp, put on by the Comox fire department, is being planned to take place from March 25 to March 28.
“This is a wonderful project and a great opportunity for the students who attend,” said Comox Fire Chief Gord Schreiner.
“For many of them it will be the most exciting thing they have done to this point in their lives. The commitment made towards this project by our firefighters and community is outstanding. Without their help this would not be possible. This is our tenth youth camp and I am looking forward to once again working with some of the young people in our community.”
The camp will be open to all high school students in the Valley in grades 11 to 12. Training will include safety in the workplace, large ladders, live fires, fire prevention, and team work, among others. Local firefighters will be providing all of the training.
In the past nine years of the camp’s operation, more than three hundred students have gone through the programming. 36 students will be taken this year, and students are able to apply to go through their schools. Training is conducted at the Comox fire hall, while students will sleep at the nearby Comox Community Centre.
A small fee is also charged.
The Comox fire department is also seeking the help of “many local businesses” to support the camp. Anyone looking for more information should give Schreiner a call at 250-339-2432.
