No injuries in Courtenay bush fire

COURTENAY, BC – A small fire behind the Real Canadian Superstore kept Courtenay crews busy early Monday afternoon.

Deputy Chief Kurt MacDonald said they received the call shortly after 12:00 p.m.

“Upon arrival, we found a large pile of blackberry bushes that were on fire,” he said.

“Crews suppressed the fire, and through the course of the investigation, we found that it had been caused by the remnants of a campfire.”

MacDonald said there were no injuries, or damage to property.

He added that crews want residents to be careful when it comes to campfires.

“Even though it is only April and we’re not that far removed from the rainy season, things are drying out rapidly,” he said.

“We encourage the public to be very careful with their cigarette butts, with the campfires and like. We definitely don’t want to have any repeats of today.”
