Glacier Kings showing signs of life, despite winless first quarter of campaign

COURTENAY, B.C. – Yes, the Comox Valley Glacier Kings are will winless in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action, but based off their last two games, the junior B squad is improving.

As it stands, a 3-2 loss to the Nanaimo Buccaneers on Thursday and a 4-1 loss to the Oceanside Generals on Friday puts the Glacier Kings at 0-12 going into Thursday’s game against the Victoria Cougars at Archie Browning Arena.

Nanaimo Buccaneers 3, Glacier Kings 2

The Glacier Kings were just under seven minutes away from securing at least a point against the hometown Buccaneers.

But Buccaneers’ forward Billy Walters scored the winner with 6:27 to play, snapping a 2-2 tie and giving the hosts a one-goal victory at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

It was a close game throughout. After a scoreless first period, the Glacier Kings’ Finn Withey got on the board 3:15 in the middle frame.

Nanaimo battled back with a pair of goals from Riley Gannon, the first at 12:04 into the frame and the second with 31 seconds to go before the intermission.

The Glacier Kings’ Jordan Neufeld made it 2-2 at the 8:55 mark of the third frame before Walters broke the deadlock.

Matthias Smith had a strong game between the pipes for Comox Valley, stopping 32 shots in a losing cause.

Oceanside Generals 4, Glacier Kings 1

The Generals built a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes and ended up exchanging goals with the Glacier Kings in the third frame to cap the game’s scoring.

With his team down 4-0, Brendan Almer scored the Glacier Kings’ lone goal at the 5:24 mark of third period.

Greyson Weme scored a pair of second period goals to give the Generals some breathing room.

ICE CHIPS: The Glacier Kings’ next home game is this Saturday, Oct. 20 when they they host the Peninsula Panthers at the Comox Valley Sports Centre. Opening puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
