Courtenay mayor says community ‘stepped up’ during a rough time

COURTENAY B.C- Mayor Bob Wells was impressed with the work fire crews and volunteers did during the Cona Hostel fire.

The fire took place at the Cona Hostel last weekend, and multiple fire crews were called to help, including the Courtenay volunteer fire department.

Wells says he was very happy with how it was handled.

“Our volunteer fire department really stepped up and was able to get the fire under control as quickly as possible and I think that goes to the amazing volunteers we have and the dedication and training they have,” said Wells.

“Not just them but bystanders as well, they did their part also to help at the scene.”

He added that as a community, Courtenay stepped up to help the hostel.

“From the city’s perspective at this point were just really appreciative of the great work that the fire department did and the people that were nearby, that jumped in and assisted as well.”

Mayor Wells also said that as of right now the Hostel is waiting to review a damage report before proceeding with future plans.
