COURTENAY, B.C. – Seal Bay Park is getting a summer upgrade.
Work is planned at the Comox Valley Regional District park starting tomorrow (May 28) with construction of a new multi-use trail and new parking area.
According to a district release, these park improvements align with public feedback received as part of the CVRD Park Management Plan public consultation process.
Work will begin on the new trail that will create a continuous multi-use loop option on the west side of Bates Road.
The trail will connect Bridges Trail to Twinflower Lane, crossing the Swamp Loop in two locations.
At the same time 1.2 kilometres of Twinflower Lane (southern portion) will be permanently closed.
During construction, expect equipment and crews on the trails around Swamp Loop trail.
This new trail construction will not require removal of trees.
In addition to the trail upgrades, Seal Bay Park will soon have a new parking area off Hardy Road, and construction is planned to start on Thursday, May 30.
The release said that “this work will help address public safety concerns relating to the existing parking area, which will be formally closed in the fall once the new parking area is operational.”
The new parking area will require the removal of three alder trees, however, roughly 90 new trees and hundreds of new shrubs will be planted in late fall, “the optimal time for planting,” according to the release.
Funding for this project is possible through the Community Works Fund, tax fund allocations for B.C. local governments to support local priorities.
Work is expected to be completed by August.
