Government cannabis store set to open in Campbell River

The province is set to roll out a recreational cannabis store in Campbell River.

The store at the Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre opens its doors for the first time at 10:00am tomorrow.

It will be the first of its kind on Vancouver Island and one of four government-run stores in B.C.

A store in Cranbrook is opening on the same day as the one in Campbell River, to go along with the two already operating in Kamloops.

Liquor Distribution Branch senior communications officer Kate Bilney said the city helped pave the way for a store.

“We aim to roll our stores out across the province to appropriately service the entire B.C. community to make sure everybody has access to safe and regulated product,” Bilney said. “Campbell River was a community that we were able to receive municipal approval in, and also locate a store.”

Director of planning Peter Wipper said once recreational cannabis was legalized last October, the city started laying the groundwork for future stores.

“We got busy amending our regulatory bylaws, so I think there were six bylaws in total that were amended,” he said. “And several council reports to set ourselves up for, first of all, reviewing applications that are received, processing them and the whole process.”

Wipper said based on their knowledge and understanding of the process, the council adopted these bylaws to deal with issues that “they can control.”

First and foremost is where the stores can be located in terms of zones, distances apart from one another, and distances from schools.

Meanwhile, Bilney said more government recreational cannabis stores will be popping up on the island as the years go by.

She added quite a lot of work has gone into the store, including a job fair in March.

Regular hours will be 10:00am to 7:00pm Monday to Thursday, 10:00am to 9:00pm Fridays and Saturdays, and 11:00am to 6:00pm on Sundays.

The store will sell dried flower, oils, capsules, and pre-rolls, which Bilney notes have all been approved by Health Canada.

Its exact address is Unit 130, 1416 Island Highway.
