LUSH Valley looking for volunteers to help with Gleaning program

After a successful first season, the LUSH Valley Food Action Society is looking to expand its volunteer base.

So far this year, the Farm Gleaning Program has seen a 350 percent growth in the amount of produce redistributed into the community versus this time in 2018.

LUSH Valley Farm Gleaning Coordinator James McKerricher says with the Farm Gleaning Program expanding, more help is needed.

“LUSH is looking for people interested in helping with the sorting or grading and distribution of produce. It is a suitable task for individuals who are not necessarily wanting to work in the fields but are interested in supporting the program. Most of the work is done sitting at a table, and no heavy lifting is required.”

The organization helps farmers and organizations distribute fresh fruits and veggies in the community.

McKerricher adds that farmers are recognizing the value of having volunteers on their farms; whether it is a weeding work bee or help with the harvest, in exchange for excess produce.

If you want to volunteer with LUSH, you can send an email to [email protected], or you can call James at 250-331-0152.
