The Comox Valley Regional District has gotten some funding to deal with coastal flooding and create sea level rise mapping.
The $500,000 grant is coming from the National Disaster Mitigation Program(NDMP) and will help develop flood models and mapping for current coastal flood hazards.
It will also help predict future sea level flood hazards for approximately 200 kilometers of coastline.
The money will also aid in a mapping exercise that will look at a flood model and map for the Oyster River system.
Senior Manager of Regional Growth Strategy and Sustainability for the CVRD, Alana Mullaly says the grant will help the district plan ahead for flooding disasters.
“This grant will enable us to do detailed mapping of our coast in order to better understand the impacts of rising sea level and storm surge associated with climate change,” said Mullaly.
“This information will help us to make policy and regulatory changes that will better prepare our community to adapt and take actions that will improve our coastal resilience. Regional flood mapping is a key component of our Regional Growth Strategy work on climate change adaptation.”
The mapping work will start this fall with completion by spring of 2020.
