One person dead after apartment fire in Merville

One person has been killed in an apartment fire this morning.

Both Oyster River and Courtenay fire crews were dispatched to the Hillview Apartment complex on Hillview Road and Highway 19A around 11:40am.

Courtenay Deputy Fire Chief Kurt Macdonald says one person was killed in the blaze.

“We received a report when we were on route there was the potential for somebody to be trapped inside… crews got a quick knockdown from the outside, we were able to gain entry into some of the units and unfortunately, we found an individual who was deceased in the fire,” said Macdonald.

An elderly man was also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Macdonald says the cause of the blaze is currently unknown.

“Nothing at this time, pretty much determined the unit that it started in. In terms of cause or a point of origin, we are still many hours away from determining.”

An investigation by both the Courtenay Fire Department and RCMP is now underway.

During that call, the Oyster River Fire Department was also dispatched to 8328 Island Highway for another structure fire.

No one was injured in that blaze.
