Courtenay-Comox MLA announces $167,000 for Comox Valley students

Around $167,000 in funding will be going to parent advisory councils to help students in the Comox Valley.

MLA for Courtenay-Comox, Ronna-Rae Leonard made the announcement yesterday.

She says it’s great to have funding that will benefit kids both inside, and outside the classroom.

“This is an opportunity for children to be immersed in arts and sport, and not always in the classroom. It’s a wonderful thing for us to be able to support the kids in the Comox Valley with this funding,” said Leonard.

Leonard also said that all schools within the Comox Valley School District will be receiving the funding.

Schools get PAC funding each year to provide students with a variety of extracurricular experiences including field trips, sports and playground equipment, music, and writing and debate competitions.

For the 2019-2020 school year, the province says more than 1,300 Parent Advisory Councils and District Parent Advisory Councils throughout B.C. are receiving approximately $11 million in Community Gaming Grant funding.

Community Gaming Grants provide up to $140 million to about 5,000 not-for-profit organizations throughout British Columbia each year.

Funding amounts for PACs are currently set at a rate of $20 per student.

The total grant amount is based on student enrollment as of the start of the previous school year.

The grant funding amount for DPACs is currently set at $2,500 per year.
