Rental apartments rising across from Campbell River Seawalk

The landscape of Campbell River’s ocean drive is changing.

WestUrban Developments Ltd. is developing two apartment buildings across from the Seawalk in Willow Point.

Southpoint at 2338 South Island Highway is a five-storey building with 70 units available for rent in 2020.

Just north of that, at 2036 South Island Highway, is Watermark, a 51-unit apartment complex, with apartments available for rent by Dec. 1.

Campbell River’s development services manager, Kevin Brooks, said both have their development permits in place.

Brooks said they are in line with the city’s Official Community Plan.

“We’re looking at our Official Community Plan when we look at where to grow the city,” he said. “So we have different visions on where that development should go. In the Willow Point area, it’s considered a village centre. Under the Official Community Plan there is a vision that the village centres will have higher density areas and along the waterfront that is actually deemed waterfront designation. It also looks at that to enable rental and condominium development along the waterfront to help support the walkway.

And then the village centre is to help support greater density to support amenities and things of that (nature) that you would want when you are living in an apartment or a condo or something of that nature.”

Brooks said the city has a strong master transportation plan in place, to meet the traffic challenges that come with new development.

“The city is looking at revisiting that master transportation plan here in the near future to look at, ‘Okay, now this is where development has occurred, what do we need to do to ensure that there is a reasonable level of traffic management throughout the community, and how do we supplant that with our transit system, our bikeway system, and our multi-moto pass systems within the community.”
