Barge near Quadra Island staying put, for now

It looks like the barge near Quadra Island and Campbell River will be sticking around a little while longer.

Transport Canada spokesperson Natalie Huneault said yesterday salvage efforts are now in place to get it removed from the area, but they likely won’t happen until later this week.

“Transport Canada is working with the responsible party, their salvage company, and the Canadian Coast Guard on the salvage of the barge. The salvage could take place later this week, depending on weather and tide levels.”

The Alaska Marine Lines barge ran aground Saturday night when it was travelling through the two communities.

Efforts were made both Sunday and Monday to get the barge out of the area, but they were unsuccessful because the ship’s hull was damaged.
