Courtenay—Alberni MP Gord Johns responds to Federal throne speech

Courtenay—Alberni MP Gord Johns says he’s disappointed in the Federal government’s plan to combat climate change.

The Throne Speech took place last week, which outlines the government’s priorities for this parliament. Johns says the Liberal government must recognize the urgency of the worsening climate emergency and take meaningful steps to fight it.

“People in our communities know how dire the consequences of the climate emergency truly are
because we are seeing the impact in our local environment. We have an emergency happening with BC wild salmon and empty words from the Liberals just won’t cut it,” said Johns.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t hear anything yesterday that assured me they will back up their pretty words with concrete action to help address the challenges we’re facing.”

Despite the government’s promises in the throne speech, Johns pointed out the Liberal’s record on tackling the climate emergency and says the environment needs action, not empty words.

“The time for talk and half measures is long over. This government needs to get serious and actually take bold action on the climate crisis. We need to stop giving billions of dollars in subsidies to major polluters and put science-based emission reductions targets into law so this government is accountable to concerned Canadians,” said Johns.
