Wins are in short supply for Comox Valley’s junior B hockey team.
But if you look at it from a half-glass-full perspective, the Glacier Kings are just one win away from year’s win total.
They head into the Christmas break with a 3-26-1 record, which puts them deep in the cellar of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s North Division.
The G-Kings finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 4-42-1-1 mark.
This year, it took 23 games for the G-Kings to post up their first win of the season, a 3-2 decision over the Saanich Braves on Nov. 23.
Since then, they picked up two more wins.
Glacier Kings head coach Jeff Dubois said while there’s been some improvement, there have been areas that need work.
“Especially on the defensive side of the puck where it’s kind of been three steps forward, two steps back,” he said. “Being a consistent team, defensively and a consistent team in terms of our structure and how hard we play, there’s been improvement but there’s still a lot of work to do.”
Their last game of 2019 was a penalty-filled, 6-1 loss to the host Kerry Park Islanders on Dec. 17.
The Islanders, who have an 8-22-3 record, are the team that the Glacier Kings hope to catch overtake.
“The goal that we’ve been working towards is making (the) playoffs and our last two games were both against Kerry Park, the team that is closest to us in terms of playoff position and we had two tough results against them, so we put ourselves in a bit of a hole going into the holiday break, here,” Dubois said.
“But the only thing that we’ve talked about in terms of wins and points is, we want to earn our way into a playoff spot and that’s certainly the goal going into January.”
With 18 games to go in the season, 19-year-old forward Tanner Roberts leads the Glacier Kings in goals (14) and points 19.
Not far behind is fellow 19-year-old Jordan Neufeld with six goals and 11 assists.
The Glacier Kings are off until Jan. 2, when they travel to Nanaimo to take on the Buccaneers.
