News Comox Valley RCMP reminding residents to lock their vehicles SHARE ON: Jon Gauthier, staff Sunday, Jan. 12th, 2020 RCMP Sign. (Vista Radio Stock Image) The Comox Valley RCMP says after a recent spike in thefts you should be making sure your vehicle is locked. It says only takes seconds for a thief to get into a car and steal any valuables inside. The Officer in Charge of the Comox Valley RCMP, Mike Kurvers says reports of things stolen from vehicles cost valuable officer time and are preventable. “This is a preventable crime of opportunity and it costs countless hours of investigation after someone has their credit/debit cards, identification, and valuable property to be stolen.” “These hours can be directed to other community priorities once we get our numbers down,” he added. In order to prevent break-ins or theft from a vehicle, the RCMP says you should: Guard your keys at all times Park in secure, well-lit areas Remove valuables from the vehicle Always make sure to lock the vehicle Do not keep a spare set of keys inside your vehicle To report a theft, or any other crime, call the Comox Valley RCMP detachment at (250) 338-1321 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
