Vancouver Island Pride weekend returning to Mount Washington

The pride flag rides high on Mount Washington next month.

You can hit the slopes during Vancouver Island Pride’s 2nd annual weekend festival, scheduled to take place on Feb. 28th and 29th.

It is designed to embrace the mountain culture while supporting gender and sexual diversity.

Looking back on last year’s festival, Dean Nelson, executive producer for Vancouver Island Pride, says the family-friendly event had a great turnout.

“It was a very mixed community affair,” Nelson says. “We had people from everywhere in the Comox Valley, all across Vancouver Island and some international guests as well.”

More are expected to attend this year as Vancouver drag-diva Conni Smudge will be in attendance, hosting various activities throughout the weekend.

This year’s lineup includes:

Friday, Feb. 28th

  • 10 am – Noon – Complimentary VIP Ski/Snowboard Guide Program
  • 3 pm – 6 pm – VIP Après Ski – Happy Hour at Ted’s
  • 8 pm – Late – VIP Talent Show hosted by the Unstoppable Conni Smudge and MegaStar Live Karaoke

Saturday, Feb. 29th

  • 10 am – Noon – Complimentary VIP Ski/Snowboard Guide Program
  • Noon – 2 pm – VIP BBQ on the Mountain
  • 2 pm – 3 pm – VIP Charity Ski/Snowboard Race
  • 3 pm – 3:30 pm – VIP Costume Pride Ski Parade
  • 3 pm – 6 pm – VIP Après Ski – Happy Hour at Ted’s
  • 8 pm – 9 pm – VIP Drag Bingo always outrageous rounds of BINGO
  • 9 pm – Late – LEAPing into 2020 with the Unstoppable Conni Smudge Drag show and MegaStar Live Dance Party

The main goal of Vancouver Island Pride’s weekend festival is to bring people together in a secure environment, allowing them to feel comfortable in their own shoes.

“Having that visibility of diversity and showing that it’s a safe destination just to be yourself is really important. Just knowing that you can be yourself, do your sport, meet other people and just have a really beautiful time up in the beautiful fresh mountain air,” Nelson adds.
