Referendum set for Hornby Island Fire Hall

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) will be holding a referendum on Saturday, April 18,
2015 regarding a loan authorization bylaw for the Hornby Island fire protection service to assist with
constructing a new fire hall.

Pending electoral assent, the Hornby Island fire protection service (fire hall construction) loan
authorization bylaw would provide funds to assist with building a new Hornby Island fire hall by
borrowing $1.6 million to be repaid over 20 years. The service area that is the subject of this bylaw
includes the Hornby Island fire protection service.

Based on the current cost estimate of $1.9 million, $200,000 in grants will come from the
Community Works Fund, and $100,000 from reserves, which leaves a balance of $1.6 million. More

Regular polls will be open on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Hornby Island
elementary school at 2100 Sollans Road, Hornby Island. Advance polls will be held on Wednesday,
April 8, 2015 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Hornby Island community centre at 4305 Central Road,
Hornby Island.

In addition, special polls will be held at the Comox Valley Regional District boardroom at 550B
Comox Road, Courtenay on both Tuesday, April 14, 2015 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday,
April 16, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There is no need to pre-register to vote, as the registration of all electors for this referendum will
take place at the time of voting.

Resident electors must produce two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) that
together show the place of residence and the elector’s name. Picture identification is not necessary.

Non-resident property electors must produce two pieces of identification (at least one with a
signature) that show the place of residence and their name, proof that they are entitled to register in
relation to the property (such as a title certificate or property tax notice), and, if applicable, written consent from the other property owners. If there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector and vote.

Qualified electors may vote by mail if they have a physical disability, illness or injury that prevents
them from voting at another voting opportunity, or if they expect to be absent from the CVRD on
general voting day and at the times of all advance voting . A mail ballot package can be requested by
contacting the CVRD office for an Application to Vote by Mail at 250-334-6000.
