Province denies SD71 request to include Grade 6s, 7s in K-5 return-to school plan

Grade 6s and 7s in the Comox Valley will only be able to come back to school one day a week.

This comes after Comox Valley Schools’ request to include them in the K-5 plan was denied by the Ministry of Education.

So, starting on Monday, Stage 3 reopening of schools will look different for many students in the valley.

Kindergarten to Grade 5 students will receive two days a week of instruction while students in Grades 6 to 12 will return to school for one day a week.

The return to school is optional.

Families have the choice of bringing their children back to class on a part-time basis this school year or continuing with the remote and online learning options.

“Schools will contact parents and caregivers by Friday to outline specific details about their child’s schedules and associated return to school protocols,” the district said in a release.

“Plans to return students to secondary school are currently being developed and individual schools will contact families.”

All full-time, part-time and on-call staff must undergo training from their respective school site Joint Health and Safety committee as part of the district’s School Reopening Framework.
