Comox Valley Schools is the first recipient of the Indigo Love of Reading Community Response Fund Grant.

It’s for $30,100 worth of books and learning material, and is designed to help give families better access to educational resources, and inspire the love of reading.

District Teacher-Librarian, Lesley Johnson, successfully pursued the grant application and bought the items that are now being delivered to schools throughout the valley.

They include Airport Elementary, Arden, Aspen, Courtenay Elementary, Cumberland Community, Ecole Puntledge Park, Huband Park, as well as the valley’s secondary schools.

After a series of rigorous judging rounds, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation announced in May that the Comox Valley application had been not only approved, but selected as the first recipient of this very special and unique award.

“The grant will give many district families better access to books and educational resources that they may not have been able to acquire during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Johnson said.

“With public libraries closed for the immediate future, we are particularly challenged and delighted to bring the love of reading home to many of our students and their families during this difficult time.”

Since 2004, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation has been dedicated to putting books in the hands of Canadian children at high-needs schools.

Indigo has committed $31 million to over 3,000 schools, benefiting more than 1,000,000 children.
