MARS needs volunteers, especially full-time work experience interns

The MARS Wildlife Rescue Centre needs your help.

The Merville centre relies on volunteers of all kinds year round for care of its animals, especially in the summer months.

It’s urgently looking to fill its work experience volunteer positions for July and August.

Assistant manager of wildlife rehabilitation, Kiersten Shyian, said the summer is their busiest time, and they typically rely on volunteers to help shoulder the load.

Shyian said there is a particular need for full-time work experience interns.

“We have a lot of volunteers who are local, who come for a few hours every week, which is super helpful to us, but we also do need the work experience volunteers,” Shyian said. “It’s the continuity we really need to be completely honest. These people are usually here five days a week, whereas local volunteers, it’s wonderful that they’re here and we love them, we could always use more, but there is just not as much continuity with them, and that’s why we need both types of volunteers.”

Due to the COVID crisis, many of its international volunteers are unable to fulfill their volunteer time, leaving MARS short of helpers.

No experience is necessary, but you have to be 19 or older to volunteer and have up-to-date tetanus shots.

All of the training is done on site.

MARS is currently caring for about 128 animals, ranging from herons and eagles to raccoons and deer.
