Traffic lights disabled at Old Island Highway and Comox Road

Courtenay is giving drivers in the valley a heads up regarding some traffic lights along 5th Street.

The city says over the weekend, an accident at the Old Island Highway and Comox Road intersection severely damaged the traffic light controller.

As a result, the traffic signals are not working and have been temporarily covered over.

Stop signs will be replacing the lights at Comox Road for the time being. The city says the damage will require a complex repair and it does not yet have an estimate on when it will be completed.

In the meantime, Courtenay is asking valley residents to drive carefully in the area and keep in mind that the lights will not be working.

It will be posting an update once more information on the timeline for repairs is available.
