BC Ferries replacing second plastic covered cable on Baynes Sound Connector

BC Ferries continues to do upgrades on the Baynes Sound Connector.

The company is replacing plastic coated cables with ‘flattened strand cables’ on the connector between Buckley Bay and Denman Island.

According to BC Ferries, the flattened strand cables are made of steel, don’t have a plastic coating, and maintain the same safety standards as the current cables.

The second of the three new cables will be installed overnight on Thursday, September 17th.

This work is not expected to impact service between Buckley Bay and Denman Island.

A third cable will be ready to install over the following months.

BC Ferries is thanking people living on Denman Island and Hornby Island for their patience while the company waited to receive the new cables.

“We share the communities’ desire to get this matter resolved,” the company said.

It added, “When this issue first arose we participated in a number of beach cleanups. We continue to monitor the performance of the plastic coated cables and can return for further cleanup efforts if needed. We are eager to rectify this issue and will keep you informed on the progress with the third and final cable.”
