Suspicious van report in Comox Valley leads police to issue safety reminders

If you see something that you think is suspicious, report it to the police.

That’s what the Comox Valley RCMP is saying, after a report about a suspicious white van cruising around Denman, Cortez, and Dogwood Streets in Comox on Tuesday afternoon.

A woman told police that she was out with her two children when they were approached by two different men associated with a white van with chrome bumpers.

The men reportedly tried to talk to the children and were asking them personal questions.

The driver was described as South Asian with a goatee, clean cut hair, and average height.

The other was also South Asian, 5’8″ to 5’11” tall with a slim build, clean cut and clean shaven.  At the time he was smoking a cigarette and wearing aviator glasses.

RCMP Const. Monika Terragni says it is important to report these suspicious activities to police right away.

She added that if suspicious activity is not reported, police can’t be “expected to know about it, to respond to it, or to warn residents.”

Terragni pointed out that the RCMP does not monitor social media for police reports, since anyone can post anything without any sort of truth verification.

“When someone calls the police and makes a report, we will conduct an investigation which lends to the credibility of the report and potentially identifies safety concerns within our community,” she said.

Terragni said this incident is “a reminder for parents to reinforce basic safety principles with their children.”
