Woman transported to hospital after fire at Campbell River cabin

Fire investigators are at the Rod and Reel resort today, trying to determine what caused a cabin to go up in flames.

Campbell River fire crews were called around 7:00pm last night, about a fire at the resort in the 3800-block of the South Island Highway.

Campbell River Deputy Fire Chief Kelly Bellefleur says when crews got there, flames were shooting out of every opening of one of the cabins.

Bellefleur said the fire could have destroyed more than just the single cabin.

“Fortunately, in this case, there was no extension from that cabin to any of the other ones. Certainly, the potential for us to lose more than the single one, for sure.”

Bellefleur says one person inside the cabin managed to get out on her own.

“She was injured, she took a fair bit of smoke, and the ambulance arrived quickly and transported her to the hospital,” he added.

In all, 16 firefighters responded.

They were there for a couple of hours to put the fire out,  and stayed on scene for another hour after that to make sure it didn’t re-ignite, Bellefleur said.
