Comox Valley RCMP reminding the community to report crimes online

The Comox Valley RCMP is reminding you to report crime through its online portal.

The detachment launched its virtual crime reporting tool in March, and Constable Monika Terragni says so far it’s seen decent use.

“We have received 93 reports online since March, however, we are still taking many reports by phone and in-person which would fit the criteria to go online.”

“We would love to see an increase in the use of this valuable tool,” she added.

The RCMP says by using the online crime tool, it allows another way to report less serious things like damage/mischief under $5,000, hit and run on a vehicle or property, bicycle theft under $5,000, theft under $5,000, and stolen property.

In order to make a report online, however, a few criteria have to be met.

That includes providing your real name with an email address, there must not be any witnesses or suspects, and no follow up needed by an officer.

The Comox Valley RCMP says in addition to providing a more convenient way for residents to make a report, the tool allows call takers and front line personnel to focus on higher priority calls, which will improve overall safety and response times in the city.
