Man arrested after barricading himself in home in Courtenay

One man is in custody after a dramatic police incident in a Courtenay neighbourhood.

The Comox Valley RCMP executed an arrest warrant on Wednesday for the suspect, who was wanted Canada wide.

Police converged on a home in Courtenay where the man was believed to be staying. When they got there, the man had armed himself with a knife and barricaded himself inside.

The Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, and members of the Crisis Negotiation Team worked together until the man was placed into custody.

“These are highly stressful, dynamic situations which have the potential for injury to involved parties, members of the public and police,” said Insp. Mike Kurvers, Officer in Charge of the Comox Valley RCMP.

“In this case, frontline and plainclothes officers quickly ensured the incident was contained to one residence and nobody was seriously injured during the arrest – this is an ideal outcome,” he added.

The 48-year old Victoria man remains in custody.
