Nationwide Emergency Alert System to be tested on 98.9 The Goat

It’s Emergency Preparedness Week, and that means you’ll hear lots of reminders about what to do if there’s a flood, earthquake, or forest fire.

And on Wednesday, just before 2 PM, you’ll hear something new… A test of “Alert Ready”, a nationwide system for immediately broadcasting warnings.

Chris Duffy of Emergency Management BC says “intrusive broadcast alerts”, as emergency planners call them, are very effective.

This Vista Radio station, along with other Vista Radio stations across Vancouver Island, and other radio and TV stations across the country, are now tied into the system.

Duffy says the power to trigger alerts rests with the province, but as the system expands police and local government authorities will also be able to issue the alerts.
