New crosswalk on Ryan Road near North Island College set to open next month

If you’ve driven on Ryan Road lately, you might have noticed a set of lights with covers on them near North Island College.

They are actually a crosswalk light, and will be in operation next month.

Ryan Road as a whole is actually managed by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure up to the Old Island Highway and the Highway 19A Bypass intersection, where the City of Courtenay takes over.

So the project is being managed by the province.

A spokesperson from the ministry told our newsroom that this project was requested by the City of Courtenay for many years and that it  will make it safer and easier for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with mobility challenges to cross the very busy Ryan Road to North Island College and the aquatic centre.

You won’t have to wait long before seeing them in action either. The province says the plan is to have them operational the week of May 17th.
