Police arrest suspect connected to downtown Courtenay dumpster fire

We’re learning of an arrest connected to a dumpster fire in downtown Courtenay.

Just after midnight last Friday, an RCMP officer patrolling downtown came across a dumpster on fire behind a business on 8th Street.

Const. Monika Terragni says that as he approached the fire, the officer spotted a man nearby who was subsequently arrested for arson.

The RCMP has not revealed whether they believe he’s responsible for any of dumpster fires reported in recent months.

Last month, deputy fire chief Kurt MacDonald told us that they’ve had to deal with over 16 of them over the tail end of 2020, and early this year.

MacDonald says that’s a considerable increase over years past.
