Provincial funding helps shape future seniors rental housing in Comox

The pieces are coming together for a seniors rental housing project in Comox.

The future complex at 1584 Balmoral Ave., was selected through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund.

The fund will provide over 2,455 rental homes for individuals, families, seniors, people with disabilities and Indigenous peoples across B.C.

The project is being done in partnership with Comox Valley Affordable Housing Society

Fred Tutt is president of the society’s board of directors. He says they’re replacing an old building with a new one.

“We’re actually demolishing a building that’s there,” he explained. “It’s been boarded up for a little while and was formerly called D’Esterre Gardens, and what we’re building is a brand-new 52-unit building, and we’re calling it Cypress Gardens.”

Tutt says they’re thrilled about the project taking the next step: “You have no idea the excitement to be able to supply 52 safe, comfortable, energy efficient homes, is just amazing for the seniors of this valley.”

Tutt says they hope to have the project finished by the fall of 2022.

“With current construction delays with certain products it may be a little bit longer but that’s what we’re hoping for,” he added.
