Canex Recycling Depot closes for good

Comox’s unstaffed recycling depot has permanently closed.

The closure came into effect last Thursday (July 1st), which means the Canex Recycling Depot is no longer operational. The Sportsplex Recycling Depot in Campell River closed as well.

These depots were targets for illegal dumping for years, prompting Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) to take action. However, there are still places to take recyclables in the Campbell River and Comox areas.

In the Comox Valley, the Comox Return Centre, Courtenay Return-It Depot, and Comox Valley Waste Management Centre remain open. And in Campbell River, the Island Return-It Centre and Campbell River Waste Management Centre are staying open.

With the unstaffed depots now closed, the CSWM is encouraging locals to use their municipal curbside recycling service. Recyclables can also be dropped off at one of the local Return-It depots or waste management centres. These facilities accept any of the materials that were accepted at the unstaffed depots, plus glass, plastic bags, outer wrap, and foam packaging.

“We want to uphold a great standard for recycling in our area, and luckily there are a number of Recycle BC supported options in our communities that allows us to recycle more items, in an effective and responsible manner with full transparency,” noted CSWM senior manager Vivian Schau.
