BC Hydro warns of high water levels in Puntledge River

BC Hydro is warning of high water levels as rain and runoff fill the Comox Lake Reservoir.

Water levels in the Comox Lake reservoir have increased to 134.1 metres and rising, after seeing a low of 132.9 metres after the cold snap in early January. They say the dam begins to free spill at 135.3 metres.

Starting tonight, BC Hydro will increase river flows from the dam to 35 to 40 cubic metres per second. This is to prevent flooding, according to Hydro.

They are asking residents to avoid a six-kilometre stretch of the river that includes Barber’s Hole, Nymph Falls and Stotan falls from Friday night until Feb. 4.

Signage will be placed at these sections of the river, other sections will stay at a normal flow rate, according to Hydro.
