Comox Valley Airport responds to possible WestJet strike

The Comox Valley Airport says it is too early to tell what potential impacts a WestJet support staff strike could have.

More than 700 WestJet baggage handlers, customer service staff and service employees in Vancouver and Calgary have voted 98 per cent in favour of strike action if a new agreement isn’t reached by next Wednesday.

The union representing the support staff, says wages top the list of contract issues.

WestJet says it’s working on a backup plan in case some of its workers walk off the job next week and the vote is a common step in the labour negotiation process and wasn’t unexpected.

They add the airline is committed to continuing negotiations.

Comox Valley Airport hopes the airline can negotiate a settlement before any job action begins.
