Park and trail counters installed to aid with improvements

Counting the number of people using trails and parks in Comox will be used to plan work and upgrades.

The town says multiple sensors have been installed in parks in the area. They use infrared wavelengths that detect pedestrians and wheeled traffic as they pass by.

Parks across the village that have sensors are as follows:

  • Northeast Woods
  • Brooklyn Creek Greenway
  • MacDonald Wood Park
  • Mack Laing Park
  • Baybrook Nature Park
  • Comox Dog Park
  • Village Park
  • Marina Park Boardwalk
  • Anderton Park
  • Lancaster Park
  • Filberg Park

Information collected by the sensors will help staff with operational work and capital improvements and assist with grant applications. Statistics will be posted to the Comox website annually.

Town staff are asking for the public’s support by not tampering with the sensors. Identification tags have been placed on the boxes as they could be misseen as hidden cameras.

They are expected to be in place indefinitely and some may be repositioned to other park locations.
