Comox shows appreciation for residents who saved rec centre user’s life

Four Comox residents are being honoured after saving a person’s life at the Comox Community Centre.

Justin Fleming, Ryan Casselman, Jenn Leakey and John Dove received certificates of appreciation from council for their efforts on Jan. 3. A customer in the fitness centre observed a person in distress and they realized the person had no pulse and was not breathing.

The quick reactions of the four saved the person’s life, with the use of a publicly accessible AED and CPR.

Comox Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance then arrived and the customer was taken to the hospital.

Each of the four involved received their separate certificates, and acting mayor Ken Grant thanked the group for their efforts.

“Comox council would like to thank you guys for your dedicated service and for the community centre going above and beyond the call of duty,” said Grant.

The Town of Comox has 50 AEDs installed at various locations. Fire Chief Gord Schreiner says situations like these prove the importance of having many installed.
