“Cone Zone” season in full effect

It’s the time of year where roads are busy with repairs and maintenance. That means Comox Valley regional road crews are hard at work around area streets.

Working on the roads can be very dangerous, so the city of Courtenay is asking drivers to be extra careful while behind the wheel and to watch out for workers.

You may see traffic personnel guiding some areas, while other work sites might only be marked by small orange cones. Speeding and distracted driving can lead to serious injuries and consequences for not only workers, but drivers as well.

To provide extra safety, a joint provincial initiative has been launched. It’s called the “Cone Zone” campaign. The campaign website (www.ConeZoneBC.com) includes resources for drivers, employers, supervisors and workers.

3 key points and helpful tips are listed on the website for drivers:

  • Slow down and drive with extreme care near a Cone Zone.
  • Stay alert and minimize distractions.
  • Think about every cone as if a human being were standing behind it.

The city of Courtenay’s occupational health and safety advisor, Paige Knapman, says worker safety is a priority for the city.
